I would love for you to be able to do the same for yourself and those that you love.

Plantar Fasciitis

Disclaimer-All information in this blog is for educational purposes. I do not diagnose or treat diseases. All information provided is designed to compliment your health care regimen.

As a massage therapist, it is not uncommon for me to see several people a week that suffer from Plantar Fasciitis.

What is plantar fasciitis? It is inflammation of the plantar aponeurosis.
I can here you now,"Okay. What the hell is that!"

First, lets look at the definitions offered in Mosby's Medical Dictionary -

Food Journaling

I know, I know, no body like keeping a food journal. But last I checked, no body likes to be over weight or underweight either. No one wants to be diabetic or have heart disease either. So why the resistance? For each of us the reason will vary.

I resisted keeping a food journal for a long time. Mainly, because it made me come face to face with a very strong love hate relationship with my worst enemy/best friend- food. I am an emotional eater...yes, I literally eat my emotions. Upset, lets eat pasta and cake.

Healthy packaged food for travel.

Just getting in from some much needed vacation. Traveling with a gluten allergy can definitely be a challenge. There is no "cheating" for the week.

If you have been around me very long, you know my mantra is "if it comes in a box, it's not food." Well ya know, that works great about 90% of the time. Packing baked potatoes on a mountain biking trip just does not sound like that much fun to me. So here is some of the things I pack for long road trips when hitting the gas station for a candy bar may be a temptation.

Gumbo!

I have been living the gluten free lifestyle for almost 2 years. I really don't miss bread or pasta that much, what I have missed is gumbo. It is such a traditional comfort food here in the south. To live life without it just seemed cruel and unfair. But one day I stumbled across a gumbo recipe in Sally Fallon's book Nourishing Traditions. And guess what? Traditionally, gumbo was made with file' and not a flour roux. I felt as though I had won the lottery. I was a little skeptical that it would really taste like gumbo.

Purpose of this Blog

I would like to share my families journey.  Due to a struggling economy and a medical "incident," we are learning to live well on less. The recipes shared on this blog are simple and affordable. They will not cater to those with food allergies other than gluten. If  you have specific food allergies I can refer you to several other wonderful and informative blogs. I want to keep this blog simple. Healthy foods, properly prepared and served to the family in a way that is nourishing not only to our bodies, but our pocket books as well.

Continuing Education at AMTA Convention

George Kousaleos and his wife Patty did a wonderful job this year at the AMTA convention in Baton Rouge. George taut a very informative class on Myofascial Therapy for the back, chest, neck and head. I recommend this class to any massage therapist looking for continuing education classes. I was able to experience the techniques in class. The techniques are very slow in pace and work deeper and deeper starting with broad tool (palms and forearm) to more specific (elbows and knuckles). My back and shoulders felt wonderful and I was able to move deeper into some of my yoga poses due to the increased range of motion.

Self massage for the neck

1. Reach around and grasp the base of your neck, squeezing it with
your hand. Move up your neck to your hairline, squeezing and
releasing as you go. Repeat as many times as the strength in your
arms and hands will comfortably allow.

2. In this move, stretch ONLY to a comfortable stretch. Use one hand to
help stretch your neck forward slowly as you exhale. Inhale and
return to start.

Would you take the strawberry?

"There is a story of a woman running away from tigers. She runs and runs and the tigers are getting closer and closer. When she comes to the edge of a cliff, she sees some vines there, so she climbs down and holds on to the vines. Looking down, she sees that there are tigers below her as well. She then notices that a mouse is gnawing away at the vine to which she is clinging. She also sees a beautiful bunch of strawberries close to her, growing out of a clump of grass. She looks up and she looks down.
